More Nomz

This is just a diagram of the existing tombs along with the additional ones that I would be proposing. The camera on my phone isn't the greatest, guess I'll have to get an iPhone -_-

Breaking Ground

So, as usual I've come up with some obnoxiously complex idea, we'll try to get this to work though. This plan that I'm working on has a lot of subtle grade shifts, and is really going to rely on multiple sets of sections, axons, and perspectives to be understandable.

What I came up with is these linear monolithic objects that look as if they arc underneath the ground and pop up on both sides of the existing site. I'm interested in creating forms that sort of suggest that they are much larger than what they actually are. The layout of these has been determined by pulling directly from the wire drawing I had produced earlier. Those 'vectors' created from the representation of the boards set into the ground plane of the existing cemetery have been translated into the layout of these monolithic structures. I think that this starts to create an interesting conversation between the macro world of this site and the micro.

Excavating A Monolith

I've decided that the design concept I want to employ for creating this structure is the idea of 'excavating a monolith.' I used to be really interested in ancient burial techniques and monolithic structures, I think it would be interesting to incorporate that into this project, since it is an expansion to a cemetery. What I'm thinking is to create a structure that looks as if it had always existed at that location, and is in the process of being uncovered.

This image is of Cueva de Menga, an ancient tomb in Antequera, Spain. The tomb is facing East, to create a relationship to the sun, and I think I'd like to pull from that idea also as I move forward with my own design.

Plaster Cast

This is a plaster cast, of yet again the same tree/concrete wall juxtaposition. I've added a representation of the light passing through the trees, via plexiglas rods that run from the bottom to the top of the cast. These will illuminate if placed over a lit surface.

Final Wire Drawing

This is the final version of the wire drawing. The same condition of the trees and the concrete wall are represented, but only via their edges. This is more about the space in between these two presences. The boards that flow across the ground place are also represented, painted in black on the white lines. I think that the white lines are interesting as an extension of these linear boards almost as vectors.

Drawdel

Here, in drawdel form, is the final paper version of the concrete wall/trees juxtaposition. I decided to use a geometric representation of the trees, just seems to work best with the medium.

Wire Drawing

This wire drawing is showing the concrete edge of the cemetery wall with the rows of tombs, against the path of trees. Here I've added the boards that line the ground, which have this effect as if they were flowing down a river.
